This huge trophy agate was brought in to Wesley's Trading Post by Valerie from Portland Saturday May 7th. She said her husband found it sticking out of the sand and had to dig it out and they were amazed at how big it was 46.8 pounds. From a beach on the coast near an RV park. You can see some the bruising that I have described in the past as looking like fingernail indentations in the rind and exposed patches of the agate and drusy crystal – quartz looking patches so not sure what is inside.

EDITORIAL NOTE: Sorry I took so long to open the photos that Patty Bullock supplied.

Back to back Agate events on the Central Oregon Coast

DiTorrice and Myers after Lincoln City event
Yesterday's Lincoln City Visitor and Convention Bureau's  Agate and Fossil trip was moved indoors to the Lincoln City Cultural Center out of concern for the safety for all attending beachcombers.  This was a standing room only event and put on by two long time members of the Oregon Coast Agate Club, Guy DiTorrice known as the Oregon Fossil Guy, and K. Myers, author of Agates of the Oregon Coast a pocket guide.

If you missed this event DiTorrice (Sunday only for fossil ID) and Myers will also be assisting with identification of local agates during the 3rd annual Agate Festival in Yachats, next Saturday and Sunday, January 18th and 19th from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Yachats Commons. The event is free.

Featured speaker this year is William Orr, emeritus professor of geology at the University of Oregon and director of the Condon collection at the Museum of Natural and Cultural History at the University. Orr will speak at the Commons Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. and his topic will be “How geologists use fossils.”

Rock Out at the beach!

This is a trial trip that we are putting together for Lincoln City visitors & tourism development.  We are hoping for gravel to be exposed but so far not many storms with wind out of the SW.  We will meet as the article states at the D-River Wayside State Park beach access on Highway 101 in the center of Lincoln City at 1:00pm. Rubber boots are recommended to cross streams of water. The beaches to be visited during the field trip depends on the local gravel bed conditions found that day and we will announce where we are headed after we meet everyone in the parking lot.

We are very fortunate to have the Oregon Fossil Guy with us as he has just returned to the Oregon coast from living in Colorado for the last four years. On any other day the Oregon Fossil Guy (this is his actual business) charges for his tours so this is a one time field trip without a fee.  Naturally there is no guarantee of where nature will uncover the gravel for this date so we will do the best we can with local information that we get that day.

If you do not have a pocket guide of Agates of the Oregon Coast you can check with the merchants in your area or Lincoln City to get your copy. This guide featuring agates to zeolites is in true color and you will be able to lay your dry specimens on the guide to identify your finds.

We look forward to seeing you folks for this fun day of beach combing in Lincoln City.

Large Agate just found!

Cheryl's trophy agates
The discover season brought beachcomber Cheryl of Pinehurst, Idaho in yesterday to share this 4" agate with us weighing over 1 pound.  The smaller black agate is also a very nice sized find.

Thank you again Cheryl, for the heads up on the notice of the book Agates: Treasures of the Earth, By Roger Pabian.  I agree this is a great book is for agates of Lake Superior, or Brazilian agates but fails to impart the info you need for the Agates of the Oregon Coast.  I just found the misleading website tonight that is representing Brazilian agates and this book for Oregon Agates.

Congratulations Cheryl, these are both very memorable trophy's to take home to Idaho.

News from the Oregon Coast...

Entered December 10, 2010... It is beginning to look a lot like beachcombing season again!  Frank was just in yesterday with a few trophies he wanted to share with everyone.  He found what we all believe could be a fossilized sea turtle scull, (yet to get this photo ) a very well defined fossilized Crepidula praerupta shell.  Frank has also been very busy educating our upcoming pebble pups by doing geological presentations for classes in our Lincoln County School District. Good job Frank!

The Oregon Coast Agate Club Christmas party was last night, great food and a fun gift exchange was had by all in attendance.  We have elected new leadership and hope to see the club continue to grow.  Visitors are always welcome to join us for the meetings held the 2nd Thursday of the month at 7:30 pm in the Central Lincoln P.U.D.(across the Hwy from Safeway) meeting room in Newport.  The annual show will be held June 18 & 19 at the Yaquina View School, multi-purpose room.

This photo to the right was found earlier last spring by  Roscoe. & Billy of Tillamook  What is it?  Looks like a crepidula...but developed the wrong direction.

November beachcombing finds...

Lucky Spike, a local beachcomber was just in with these beauties he has found over the last week or so.  The fossilized crab claw (rarely ever found) is really quite impressive.   The agates are very nice sized  sard (brownish one), blue-black, and the bottom one is a cloud agate.

Considering that the beaches are not gravely yet, this just goes to show you, that you too can find some goodies during our "Discovery season" which is the value season here on the Oregon coast.

Agatized Marine Gastropods

Would you have recognized the white specimen as being an agatized snail? Many folks do not look before tossing their finds into the rock polisher.

The top specimen was found by Frank and the white one was found by Scott both are beachcomber residents of Agate Beach.
