This huge trophy agate was brought in to Wesley's Trading Post by Valerie from Portland Saturday May 7th. She said her husband found it sticking out of the sand and had to dig it out and they were amazed at how big it was 46.8 pounds. From a beach on the coast near an RV park. You can see some the bruising that I have described in the past as looking like fingernail indentations in the rind and exposed patches of the agate and drusy crystal – quartz looking patches so not sure what is inside.

EDITORIAL NOTE: Sorry I took so long to open the photos that Patty Bullock supplied.

Beautiful black agate found on the Oregon Coast by beachcomber Timothy DiGennaro. Notice how the center cavity is framed or outlined so nicely by a lovely fortification pattern or design. The exterior looks like an exquisite china pattern.  Nice find there Timothy, thank you for sharing this with the agate world.

Nice Zeolite found recently on the Oregon Coast

Zeolite
Pat our very talented beach comber and agate calendar photographer hauled in this spectacular zeolite.   To learn a little more about zeolite minerals check out Karen's blog explaining the difference between Prehnite and Thomsonite. Pat also found a 1¼ lb. partial carnelian agate along with many smaller agates two days ago. I have only seen one more complete zeolite like this and that was a few years ago by Linda Davis of Lincoln City.  Nice collecting there folks.

Rock Out at the beach!

This is a trial trip that we are putting together for Lincoln City visitors & tourism development.  We are hoping for gravel to be exposed but so far not many storms with wind out of the SW.  We will meet as the article states at the D-River Wayside State Park beach access on Highway 101 in the center of Lincoln City at 1:00pm. Rubber boots are recommended to cross streams of water. The beaches to be visited during the field trip depends on the local gravel bed conditions found that day and we will announce where we are headed after we meet everyone in the parking lot.

We are very fortunate to have the Oregon Fossil Guy with us as he has just returned to the Oregon coast from living in Colorado for the last four years. On any other day the Oregon Fossil Guy (this is his actual business) charges for his tours so this is a one time field trip without a fee.  Naturally there is no guarantee of where nature will uncover the gravel for this date so we will do the best we can with local information that we get that day.

If you do not have a pocket guide of Agates of the Oregon Coast you can check with the merchants in your area or Lincoln City to get your copy. This guide featuring agates to zeolites is in true color and you will be able to lay your dry specimens on the guide to identify your finds.

We look forward to seeing you folks for this fun day of beach combing in Lincoln City.

5 Pound Agate Found on the Oregon Coast

Our buddy Rascal of Tillamook Oregon, found this 5 pound agate recently on the north coast.  The outside was a typical gray agate with some basalt but when cut open it exposed some exceptional color for an Oregon coast agate and was just as nice as some of the best Brazilian Agate.

Nice find Roscoe!
Lower view exposes the exceptional banding hidden within.
