Agates, jasper, petrified wood, 15 - 20 million year old marine fossils, to zeolites and more as found on Oregon's scenic beaches! This is brought to you as a continuation of my pocket guides Agates of the Oregon Coast and/or Agates of the Pacific Coast.Unknownnoreply@blogger.comBlogger227125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4656202104910867369.post-75018669131317111682017-01-27T12:07:00.000-08:002017-02-01T11:35:55.401-08:00Be mindful of the power of the Pacific<div data-setdir="false" dir="ltr" id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1485546053835_9144" style="font-family: helveticaneue, "helvetica neue", helvetica, arial, "lucida grande", sans-serif; margin-bottom: 0in; margin-top: 0.1em; padding: 0px;">

The Oregon State Parks website has this to say about sneaker waves: “They’re called sneaker waves because they appear without warning, often surging high up on the beach with deadly force, and are impossible to predict. Sneaker waves also carry a large amount of sand that can saturate your clothes, weighing you down and making escape difficult, if not impossible.” The advice from state parks officials is, “Never turn your back on the ocean.”

That’s good advice for everyone. Even those of us who have lived next to the Pacific Ocean for years can sometimes forget how much power is contained within those waves. It’s also incumbent on us locals to sound a warning if we encounter visitors who unknowingly place themselves in harm’s way.

We certainly aren’t advocating that people steer clear of the beaches this time of year — we believe our beaches provide some of nature’s best playgrounds. Beautiful black agate found on the Oregon Coast by beachcomber Timothy DiGennaro. Notice how the center cavity is framed or outlined so nicely by a lovely fortification pattern or design. The exterior looks like an exquisite china pattern. Nice find there Timothy, thank you for sharing this with the agate world.

Monday the Oregon Fossil Guy and I had a nice afternoon checking out the beach. Conditions were clear and we pretty much had the beaches to ourselves. We had a rather successful day.

I hadn't been out there in some time to see these conditions exposing the tide pools out beyond the normal tide line. I came home with a nice piece of bone, some petrified wood, beautiful fancy jasper, brecciated jasper and a few agates. Much to our disappointment the blue appearing agate on the right is NOT a blue agate but just a cloud agate with a bluish rind. Hopefully today's storm will remove the sand necessary to expose the gravel bars further up the beach. Please be careful out there and don't try beach combing today with this storm lasting until 6:00 tonight. Today is definitely a good day to storm watch from the safety and comfort of your warm beach front hotel room.

Pat our very talented beach comber and agate calendar photographer hauled in this spectacular zeolite. To learn a little more about zeolite minerals check out Karen's blog explaining the difference between Prehnite and Thomsonite. Pat also found a 1¼ lb. partial carnelian agate along with many smaller agates two days ago. I have only seen one more complete zeolite like this and that was a few years ago by Linda Davis of Lincoln City. Nice collecting there folks.

"N.O.A.A. makes it clear that this is not the day to go to the beach and
gawk at Mother Nature’s fury. Do it from the safety of the bluffs above
or at your favorite cliff-side resort or restaurant. Today will be as dangerous a
day as you’ll ever see on the Oregon Coast. Probably some of the best
ringside seats will be at the Adobe in Yachats. Lots of huge swells,
breakers over rocks, huge upward fountains of white water – the works.
Restaurants perched right above the waters of Depoe Bay will also
provide spectacular views of the power of the wind and sea.

Again, don’t risk being blown off a rock or a hill or a cliff. Respect Mother Nature’s fury. She’s the boss right now." Give Mother Nature a chance for a few of these good storms like this out of the S.W. and the gravel beds should be uncovered for a successful beachcombing season to start.
